Description
Western Indian Physic (Porteranthus stipulatus), also known as American Ipecac or Gillenia stipulata, is a modest native perennial with airy clusters of small white flowers that resemble spirea or even apple blossoms. Blooming from late spring into early summer, it brings a lighter, more subtle look compared to showier prairie flowers.
Plants typically reach a few feet tall and have a slender, upright habit that adds movement and texture to plantings. The flowers attract a range of pollinators, and the plant continues to offer interest later in the season with its seed heads and fall color.
Western Indian Physic grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium moisture. It’s commonly found along woodland edges, open woods, and prairies, and works well in naturalized plantings where a softer, more refined look is desired. It pairs especially well with other natives like Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) and blends easily into mixed plantings without overwhelming nearby species.
