Description

Cream Wild Indigo (Baptisia bracteata), also called Longbract Wild Indigo, Cream False Indigo, or Baptisia leucophaea, is a low, bushy native perennial known for its soft cream to pale yellow flower spikes that appear early in the season. It’s one of the first prairie plants to bloom, often from spring into early summer.

Plants typically grow around 1–2 feet tall but spread wider, with blue-green foliage that adds texture even after flowering. The blooms are especially important for early pollinators, including queen bumblebees emerging from hibernation. Later in the season, flowers give way to light green seed pods that turn dark by fall, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Cream Wild Indigo grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils with moderate moisture. It can take a few years to establish and begin flowering but becomes long-lived once established.

It also serves as a host plant for several species, including the Wild Indigo Duskywing, Hoary Edge, and Orange Sulphur butterflies, making it a valuable addition to pollinator-focused plantings.

Cream Wild Indigo pairs well with other Baptisia species like Blue Wild Indigo (Baptisia australis), White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba), Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia sphaerocarpa), and Small Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria), which share similar growing conditions but offer different sizes and bloom colors. Together, they create a complementary planting with early-season interest, strong structure, and long-term durability in prairie and garden settings.

PLS stands for Pure Live Seed, an industry-standard measure of seed quality. It reflects the portion of seed in a batch that is viable and capable of germinating.

What this means for you: when you purchase 1 lb. of PLS seed, the physical weight of the seed you receive will be slightly more than 1 lb. That’s because we account for non-viable seed and natural inert material upfront, so you receive a full pound of live, plantable seed.

Many companies sell bulk seed by total weight, which can include filler and non-viable seed. By pricing based on PLS, we make sure you’re getting exactly what you paid for—high-quality native seed with more predictable, successful germination.
