Description
Shining Bluestar (Amsonia illustris), also called Ozark Bluestar, Missouri Bluestar, or Showy Bluestar, is a native wildflower with clusters of star-shaped, light blue flowers. Blooming in early to mid-spring, it provides an important early nectar source for bees and butterflies.
It typically grows 2–3 feet tall with a shrub-like form. The glossy, willow-like leaves give it a clean look through the season, then turn a rich golden yellow in fall. After flowering, slender seed pods develop and can add subtle texture.
Shining Bluestar grows best in full sun to partial shade and is highly adaptable. It thrives in moist soils but can also handle sandy, rocky, and even clay soils. In richer or shadier conditions, stems may become leggy, but cutting the plant back after bloom encourages a fuller, more compact shape.
It is deer- and rabbit-resistant due to its mildly toxic sap and is easy to grow from seed. In ideal conditions, it can grow larger than expected, so occasional pruning helps maintain its form.
Shining Bluestar pairs well with other early- to mid-season natives like Wild Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata), Golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea), and Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis). Adding later-season plants like Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata) or New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) helps carry color through the rest of the season.
