Description
River Bulrush (Schoenoplectus fluviatilis), also known as river bulrush, is a tall native wetland plant commonly found in marshes, wetlands, and along lake and river margins throughout much of North America. Its sturdy, upright stems form dense stands that create strong vertical structure in wetland landscapes.
This species spreads through underground rhizomes, gradually forming colonies that help stabilize shorelines and reduce erosion in saturated soils and shallow water. River Bulrush also provides valuable habitat for birds, amphibians, and aquatic insects that rely on wetland vegetation.
River Bulrush thrives in full sun and grows best in wet soils or shallow standing water. It is frequently used in wetland restoration, shoreline stabilization, and rain garden projects where its strong root system helps filter runoff and support healthy aquatic ecosystems.
