Description
Blue Sage (Salvia azurea), also known as Azure Blue Sage or Pitcher Sage, is a standout native prairie plant known for its clear, sky-blue flowers that are uncommon in late-season landscapes. The slender stems carry clusters of bright blooms that seem to float above surrounding plants, making them easy to spot from a distance—especially among the yellows of early fall prairie flowers.
Blooming from late summer into early fall, it’s a strong pollinator plant that attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. The foliage has a light, aromatic scent typical of salvias, which also helps deter deer and rabbits.
Blue Sage thrives in full sun and prefers medium to dry, well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky sites. Once established, it’s drought tolerant and low maintenance. It does best in a naturalized setting with grasses or other sturdy plants to lean on, as it can sometimes flop in richer soils.
