Description
Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), also known as Narrowleaf Mountain Mint, is one of the most dependable pollinator plants you can grow. A member of the mint family, it reaches about 2–3 feet tall and gradually spreads by underground rhizomes to form loose colonies over time.
This species is easy to recognize by its fine, needle-like silvery-green leaves and upright branching stems. The narrow foliage gives the plant a soft, airy look that contrasts nicely with broader prairie flowers. From early summer through early fall, clusters of small white flowers—often dotted with faint purple spots—form at the tips of the stems. These nectar-rich blooms quickly attract bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects. The leaves are strongly aromatic and release a minty scent when crushed, which help discourage deer browsing.
Slender Mountain Mint grows best in full sun and adapts well to dry or average soils once established. It naturally occurs in prairies, woodland edges, and open fields, making it a great choice for pollinator gardens, native borders, and restoration plantings. While it can spread aggressively, clumps are easy to divide and transplant.
