Description
Water Knotweed (Polygonum amphibium), also known as water smartweed or amphibious knotweed, is a versatile native aquatic plant that grows both in shallow water and on wet soils along shorelines. Its floating or emergent leaves create lush patches of greenery in wetland environments.
In summer, upright spikes of bright pink flowers rise above the foliage, adding vibrant color to ponds, marshes, and wetland edges. These blooms attract bees and other pollinators, while the plant’s seeds provide food for birds and aquatic wildlife.
Water Knotweed spreads through rhizomes to form colonies that help stabilize wet soils and shallow shorelines. It thrives in full sun and performs best in saturated soils or shallow water, making it a valuable species for pond margins, rain gardens, and wetland restoration projects.
