Description
Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum var. commutatum), also known as Great Solomon’s seal, is an elegant native woodland plant prized for its arching stems and graceful growth habit. Each stem carries alternating leaves that form a gentle arch, creating a soft, flowing structure in shaded gardens.
In spring, small creamy white tubular flowers hang beneath the stems, often appearing in pairs along the leaf axils. These delicate blooms attract early pollinators and are later followed by small blue-black berries that provide food for birds.
Solomon’s Seal thrives in partial to full shade and prefers rich, moderately moist woodland soils. It spreads slowly through rhizomes to form attractive colonies, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized landscapes where it adds texture and seasonal interest.
