Description
Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is a unique native cactus found across much of eastern North America, thriving far beyond desert landscapes. This sun-loving species grows best in dry, sandy, or well-drained soils and is ideal for the hottest, driest areas of the garden where many other plants struggle. Its low-growing pads form attractive clusters that add distinctive structure and texture to native plantings.
From June through July, the cactus produces striking 3-inch bright yellow blooms that attract a wide range of pollinators, including bees, beetles, and butterflies. After flowering, the pads develop vibrant red edible fruits that provide additional seasonal interest and food for wildlife.
Over time, Eastern Prickly Pear spreads to form a creeping mat that helps stabilize dry soils and reduce erosion. This species pairs well with other drought-tolerant prairie plants adapted to hot, dry conditions and sandy sites.
