Description
Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia humifusa) is a unique native that brings a desert-like look to eastern landscapes. It grows low to the ground, forming clusters of flat, green pads that spread over time and add bold texture to dry, sunny areas.
This cactus thrives in full sun and very well-drained soils—especially sandy or rocky sites. It’s a great choice for the hottest, driest parts of your garden where most plants struggle. Once established, it requires very little care and can handle winter cold and snow, coming back each year without issue.
In early to mid-summer, it produces bright yellow flowers about 3 inches wide that attract bees, beetles, and butterflies. After blooming, the pads develop red, edible fruits that add color and provide food for wildlife.
Over time, Eastern Prickly Pear spreads into a low, creeping mat that helps stabilize soil and reduce erosion. It’s easy to establish—pads can be placed directly into sandy soil to root—but be careful when handling due to the sharp spines.
It pairs well with other plants that thrive in hot, dry, well-drained conditions like Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis), Prairie Dropseed (Sporobolus heterolepis), Purple Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe involucrata), and Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) for a tough, drought-tolerant planting.
