Description
Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida), also known as Prairie Goldenrod, is a bold native that really shines late in the season. Its flat-topped clusters of bright yellow flowers bloom in late summer into fall, right when many other plants are fading. These blooms are a major draw for bees and butterflies—including Monarchs—and later in the season, the seeds provide food for birds.
It’s a tough, adaptable perennial that does well in everything from clay to sandy soils and thrives in full sun. It’s a great fit for prairies, meadows, and native garden plantings where you want reliable color and pollinator activity. It will spread by seed over time, so in smaller spaces you can remove seed heads to keep it more contained. Despite its showy blooms, it doesn’t cause allergies—goldenrods are insect-pollinated, not wind-pollinated like ragweed.
