Description
Water Horehound (Lycopus americanus), also known as American Bugleweed, is a native wetland plant that grows along streams, ponds, and marshy areas. It produces small white flowers along the stems during summer, which attract bees and other pollinators. While the flowers are modest, the plant plays an important role in wetland ecosystems by providing nectar and habitat.
Water Horehound grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist to wet soils. It spreads gradually by rhizomes, allowing it to form patches in suitable conditions. This species works well in rain gardens, shoreline plantings, and wetland restoration projects where native plants adapted to saturated soils are needed.
