Description
Marsh Blazing Star (Liatris spicata), also known as dense blazing star or marsh gayfeather, is a striking native wildflower known for its tall spikes of vibrant purple flowers. Unlike many flowering plants that bloom from the bottom up, blazing stars bloom from the top of the spike downward, creating a unique and eye-catching display.
Blooming in mid to late summer, the nectar-rich flowers are a favorite of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Monarchs and swallowtails are especially drawn to the bright purple blooms during peak flowering.
Marsh Blazing Star grows best in full sun and prefers medium to moist soils. It naturally occurs in wet meadows and marsh edges, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and prairie plantings where its tall spikes add color, height, and benefits for wildlife.
