Description
American Water Willow (Justicia americana), also known as water willow, grows naturally along riverbanks, streams, and pond edges where it forms dense patches of bright green foliage. The narrow leaves and upright stems create a soft, willow-like appearance that blends easily into wetland landscapes.
In mid to late summer, clusters of pale lavender to light purple flowers appear near the tips of the stems. Bees and other pollinators regularly visit the blooms while they are in flower.
American Water Willow spreads through rhizomes and gradually forms colonies that help stabilize shorelines and reduce erosion along waterways. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and thrives in saturated soils or shallow water. Plant it along ponds, streambanks, or wetland edges.
