Description
Torrey’s Rush (Juncus torreyi), also known as Torrey’s rush, is a sturdy native plant commonly found in wet prairies, marsh edges, and moist meadows across much of North America. Its upright, cylindrical stems grow in dense clumps, adding vertical texture and structure to wetland and prairie plantings.
During the growing season, clusters of small greenish-brown flowers develop near the tips of the stems. While the blooms are subtle, they provide ecological value by supporting insects and contributing to healthy native plant communities.
Torrey’s Rush thrives in full sun and performs best in moist to wet soils, though it can tolerate periodic flooding. It is frequently used in rain gardens, wet prairie restorations, and naturalized landscapes where its dense root system helps stabilize soil and improve water infiltration.
