Description

Dudley’s Rush (Juncus dudleyi), also known as Dudley’s Rush, is a hardy native rush that adds fine texture and year-round structure to prairies, rain gardens, and wetland plantings. Unlike grasses, rushes have smooth, round stems instead of flat leaf blades, with small, understated flower clusters that develop along the stems during the growing season.

As a cool-season perennial, Dudley’s Rush grows most actively during the spring and fall. It thrives in full sun and adapts to a wide variety of soils, including loam, clay, clay loam, gravel, and other disturbed sites. While it tolerates average moisture, it performs best in medium to wet soils and is commonly found in wet prairies, prairie swales, fens, ditches, gravelly seeps, and other seasonally wet habitats.

Dudley’s Rush spreads by short rhizomes and can form dense colonies in favorable conditions, making it an excellent choice for erosion control, rain gardens, bioswales, and prairie restoration projects. Its extensive root system helps stabilize soil while adding durable structure to native plant communities.

This native rush also provides valuable wildlife benefits. A variety of insects, including billbugs, leaf beetles, seed bugs, leafhoppers, and several moth species, feed on the plant. The seeds are eaten by birds and other wildlife, including Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail, King Rail, Sora, Virginia Rail, and White-footed Mice.

PLS stands for Pure Live Seed, an industry-standard measure of seed quality. It reflects the portion of seed in a batch that is viable and capable of germinating.

What this means for you: when you purchase 1 lb. of PLS seed, the physical weight of the seed you receive will be slightly more than 1 lb. That’s because we account for non-viable seed and natural inert material upfront, so you receive a full pound of live, plantable seed.

Many companies sell bulk seed by total weight, which can include filler and non-viable seed. By pricing based on PLS, we make sure you’re getting exactly what you paid for—high-quality native seed with more predictable, successful germination.
