Description
Sweet Grass (Hierochloe odorata), also known as vanilla grass or holy grass, is a fragrant native grass treasured for both its ecological value and cultural significance. When crushed or dried, the leaves release a distinctive sweet, vanilla-like scent that has long been used in traditional ceremonies, basket weaving, and braiding.
This graceful grass forms soft, flowing patches of bright green leaves that create a lush groundcover effect in natural landscapes. In late spring to early summer, delicate flower panicles appear above the foliage, adding subtle texture.
Sweet Grass spreads through creeping rhizomes, gradually forming colonies that help stabilize soil and fill open spaces. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium to moist soils, making it well suited for prairies, meadows, and naturalized plantings where it provides both beauty and cultural heritage value.
