Description
Big-leaved Aster (Eurybia macrophylla) is a woodland native valued for both its foliage and late-season blooms. Large heart-shaped leaves form a low ground layer in spring and summer, helping suppress weeds and fill space in shaded gardens. In late summer to early fall, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying clusters of pale lavender to white flowers with yellow centers.
These blooms provide an important nectar source for late-season pollinators. Big-leaved Aster grows best in partial shade to full shade and prefers medium moisture and rich woodland soils. It spreads slowly by rhizomes to form small colonies. This species works well in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized plantings under trees.
