Description
Boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) is a tall native wildflower commonly found in wet meadows, marsh edges, and low prairie areas. One of its most distinctive features is its leaves, which are joined at the base and appear to grow straight through the stem, giving the plant a unique, easy-to-recognize look. The stems are also covered in fine, spreading hairs that add to its texture.
In late summer, clusters of small white flowers form flat to slightly rounded heads at the top of the plant. These blooms attract a wide range of pollinators—including bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects—thanks to their easily accessible nectar. It serves as an important late-season nectar source when many other plants are beginning to fade.
Boneset grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium to wet soils. It’s well-suited for rain gardens, wet prairies, and naturalized plantings where consistent moisture is present. Its upright habit and strong ecological value make it a reliable addition to native landscapes.
