50 Plug Tray Out of Stock

Description

Bristly Sedge (Carex comosa), also known as Bottlebrush Sedge, is a striking native wetland sedge best known for its distinctive bottlebrush-like seed heads. The long, cylindrical seed spikes are covered with bristly fruits that persist through much of the growing season, adding unique texture to rain gardens and wetland plantings. Growing 2 to 3 feet tall, it forms attractive clumps of arching green foliage.

As a cool-season sedge, Bristly Sedge does most of its active growth during the spring and fall. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently wet, mucky soils. It naturally occurs in marshes, swamps, bogs, wet meadows, swales, and along pond and stream edges, where it can even tolerate shallow standing water.

Bristly Sedge spreads gradually by short rhizomes, forming colonies over time that help stabilize shorelines, reduce erosion, and improve wetland habitat. It is an excellent choice for rain gardens, bioswales, pond margins, and restoration projects where reliable moisture is available.

Like many native sedges, Bristly Sedge provides valuable habitat for wildlife. Its dense foliage offers cover for aquatic insects and other wetland animals, while several moths and butterflies use it as a larval host plant, including the Eyed Brown, Tufted Sedge Moth, and American Ear Moth.

If you’re looking for other native sedges for wet landscapes, consider Tussock Sedge (Carex stricta) for saturated soils, Fox Sedge (Carex vulpinoidea) for rain gardens and wet meadows, Emory’s Sedge (Carex emoryi) for streambanks and floodplains, or Water Sedge (Carex aquatilis) for standing water and shoreline restoration.

PLS stands for Pure Live Seed, an industry-standard measure of seed quality. It reflects the portion of seed in a batch that is viable and capable of germinating.

What this means for you: when you purchase 1 lb. of PLS seed, the physical weight of the seed you receive will be slightly more than 1 lb. That’s because we account for non-viable seed and natural inert material upfront, so you receive a full pound of live, plantable seed.

Many companies sell bulk seed by total weight, which can include filler and non-viable seed. By pricing based on PLS, we make sure you’re getting exactly what you paid for—high-quality native seed with more predictable, successful germination.
