Description
Appalachian Sedge (Carex appalachica), also called Appalachian oak sedge, is a fine-textured woodland sedge that forms soft clumps of narrow green leaves. It grows best in dry to medium soils in partial shade to full shade and is commonly found in oak woodlands and forest edges. Plants typically reach about 8–12 inches tall and slowly spread by short rhizomes.
Appalachian Sedge works well as a low ground layer in woodland gardens where turf grass struggles. It tolerates dry shade once established and mixes well with spring ephemerals and other shade perennials. Because of its tidy habit and adaptability, it is often used as a native lawn alternative or for naturalizing beneath trees.
