Description
Bush’s Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe bushii) is a low-growing native wildflower that spreads slowly across the ground, producing bright magenta cup-shaped blooms from late spring into summer. The flowers have a deep rose color and pale centers, creating a vivid contrast against the plant’s trailing foliage. This species performs best in full sun and well-drained soils, especially sandy or rocky sites. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions well. Bush’s Poppy Mallow works nicely in prairie gardens, rock gardens, slopes, and other sunny areas where a spreading groundcover is useful. Bees and other pollinators regularly visit the flowers during bloom. Its trailing stems weave naturally between grasses and neighboring wildflowers, creating a colorful ground layer in native plantings.
