Description
The Bottomland Blend native seed mix is designed for river floodplains, riparian buffers, and low-lying areas with mesic to wet soils. Tolerant of periodic flooding, it establishes reliably to provide nectar, seeds, and cover while improving soil stability and water infiltration.
What sets this mix apart is its ability to handle changing water conditions. It performs well in areas that stay damp, flood occasionally, or hold water after heavy rains, making it ideal for low spots, drainage areas, pond and creek edges, and poorly drained field edges.
This mix combines robust native grasses with moisture-adapted wildflowers to create a resilient, long-lasting planting. Grasses like Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii), Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum), and Virginia Wildrye (Elymus virginicus) provide structure and erosion control, while a diverse mix of forbs ensures season-long blooms.
Early species like Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) and Illinois Bundleflower (Desmanthus illinoensis) establish quickly, followed by summer blooms from Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata) and Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). Late-season species such as New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novaeangliae) extend blooms and provide seed, while Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) and Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) thrive in wetter areas.
Adapted to full to partial sun and mesic to wet soils, this mix is ideal for restoration projects, stormwater areas, and naturalized landscapes. For wetter zones, try the Emergent Wetland Mix. For slightly drier sites, see the Sedge Meadow Blend.
