Description
Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense), also known as Canadian wild ginger, is a lush native woodland groundcover prized for its large, heart-shaped leaves and dense spreading habit. The soft green foliage forms attractive colonies that create a natural carpet across shaded woodland gardens and forest floors.
In early spring, unusual reddish-brown flowers appear hidden beneath the leaves near the soil surface. These unique blooms are pollinated by small insects and often go unnoticed unless closely observed. While the plant is called wild ginger because of its aromatic roots, it is not the same as culinary ginger.
Wild Ginger thrives in partial to full shade and prefers rich, moist woodland soils. Its spreading rhizomes gradually form dense colonies that help suppress weeds, stabilize soil, and create a beautiful native groundcover for shaded landscapes.
