Description
Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata), also known as swamp vervain, is a tall native wildflower known for its elegant candelabra-like flower spikes. Multiple upright stems branch near the top, each holding slender spikes of small purple-blue flowers that bloom gradually through the summer.
These nectar-rich blooms are a favorite of pollinators, drawing in bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects throughout the growing season. The plant’s tall, airy structure also adds vertical interest to native plantings and naturalized landscapes.
Blue Vervain thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium to moist soils. It naturally grows in wet meadows, streambanks, and prairie lowlands, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, pollinator gardens, and habitat plantings where it supports both wildlife and ecological diversity.
