Description
Prairie Dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum), also known as prairie rosinweed, is a bold native prairie plant known for its massive leaves and tall flower stalks. The huge basal leaves can reach over a foot long and often stand upright, creating a dramatic presence at ground level.
In mid to late summer, tall leafless stems rise well above the foliage and produce bright yellow sunflower-like flowers. Bees and other pollinators quickly find the nectar-rich blooms, bringing steady activity to the garden during peak summer.
Prairie Dock grows best in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, including clay or rocky sites. Its deep taproot allows it to handle drought and tough prairie conditions once established. Plant it in prairie gardens or naturalized landscapes where its large leaves and tall flower stems add bold structure and long-lasting summer color.
