Description
Ohio Spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis), also known as Bluejacket, is a hardy native perennial with grass-like blue-green foliage and striking blue to rose-purple blooms. Its flowers open in the morning and close by midday, creating a dynamic display from May through July.
This adaptable species grows well in a variety of soils—including clay and sand—and is commonly found in prairies, meadows, and roadside plantings. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers dry to average soils. While excellent for attracting native bees, especially bumblebees, it can spread aggressively and may not be suited for small or tightly managed gardens.
With its tough nature and pollinator value, Ohio Spiderwort is an ideal choice for wildflower meadows and naturalized landscapes.
