Description
Lizard’s Tail (Saururus cernuus) is a perennial wildflower native to eastern North America, known for its distinctive drooping white flower spikes that resemble a lizard’s tail. It grows up to 3 feet tall in wet soils and shallow water, with lance-shaped, fragrant leaves that add texture and interest to shaded, damp landscapes.
Ideal for marshes, streambanks, and water gardens, this rhizomatous plant spreads to form dense colonies that help control erosion and provide valuable wildlife habitat. Blooming in mid to late summer, it thrives in partial to full shade and consistently moist soils.
Also known as Water Dragon, American Swamp Lily, and Breastweed, Lizard’s Tail brings both ornamental beauty and ecological value to wetland plantings.
