Description
Southern Blue Flag Iris (Iris virginica) is a striking native perennial found throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada, known for its light blue to violet blooms that appear in late spring. Each flower features bright green, strap-like leaves and delicate petals marked with white and sometimes a yellow frill, adding vibrant color to wetland edges and water gardens.
Thriving in moist to very wet soils—including boggy, acidic areas and shallow water up to 6 inches deep—this iris spreads slowly by rhizomes. It’s ideal for pond margins, rain gardens, and damp, naturalized landscapes. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, Iris virginica brings long-lasting beauty and biodiversity to wet habitats.
