Description
Canada Milkvetch (Astragalus canadensis) is a short‑lived perennial that blooms from June through September with clusters of small, creamy‑white tubular flowers accented by yellow centers. Its rhizomatous root system makes it an excellent choice for erosion control, while its nectar‑rich blossoms draw hummingbirds, honeybees, and other pollinators.
As a legume, it also attracts seed‑eating birds—such as turkey—in late summer and early autumn, and by the time it reaches its three‑foot height it provides valuable forage for insects, deer, and small mammals. Native to most of the continental United States (excluding the extreme Southwest and Southeast), Canada Milkvetch thrives in medium‑wet to medium‑dry soils under full to partial sun.
