Description
Dark-green Bulrush (Scirpus atrovirens), also known as Green Bulrush or Black Bulrush, is a perennial cool-season sedge native to wetlands throughout eastern Canada and the United States. It thrives in full sun and saturated soils, forming dense clumps through rhizomes and fibrous roots.
This species is highly tolerant of standing water—often growing in water depths exceeding one foot—making it a strong choice for lakeshore restoration, pond margins, rain gardens, bioswales, and other wetland plantings. Its robust root system helps stabilize soil and filter runoff, supporting healthier aquatic ecosystems.
As a cool-season grower, Dark-green Bulrush puts on most of its growth during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are lower, offering early-season structure and habitat in wetland environments.
