Description
Great Bulrush (Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani), also known as softstem bulrush, is a tall native wetland plant commonly found in marshes, ponds, lake margins, and slow-moving waterways throughout North America. Its smooth, upright stems create strong vertical structure in wetland plantings and natural shoreline habitats.
This species spreads gradually through underground rhizomes, forming dense stands that help stabilize shorelines and reduce erosion. The stems support aquatic wildlife and provide shelter for birds, amphibians, and beneficial insects.
Great Bulrush thrives in full sun and performs best in wet soils or shallow standing water. It is commonly used in wetland restoration, pond edges, and rain gardens where its strong root system helps filter runoff and improve water quality.
