Description
Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a warm-season, clump-forming native grass found across much of the U.S., excluding the West Coast. Reaching 2 to 4 feet tall, it features upright stems, purplish seed heads, and fine-textured green-blue foliage that turns coppery red in fall. This low-maintenance perennial adds year-round interest to native plantings, prairies, and meadows.
Highly valued for erosion control, its deep root system—up to 5 or 6 feet—stabilizes soil and improves drought resilience. Little Bluestem performs well in full sun and well-drained soils, and it tolerates a wide range of conditions, from extreme heat and summer drought to harsh winter weather.
The ‘Aldous’ variety offers enhanced vigor and forage quality while maintaining the same ornamental and ecological benefits. It blooms from June through August and is adapted to USDA zones 3–9.
