Description
Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum virginianum), also known as Virginia mountain mint, is one of the best native plants for supporting pollinators. Its clusters of small white flowers bloom in mid to late summer and quickly become covered with bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects.
The plant’s silvery-green bracts give the flower clusters a soft, frosted appearance that stands out nicely in prairie plantings. When the leaves are crushed, they release a pleasant minty aroma, adding another layer of interest to the plant.
Mountain Mint grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium soils, though it adapts well to a range of conditions once established. It spreads gradually through rhizomes, forming colonies. This makes it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, prairie plantings, and naturalized landscapes where ecological value is a priority.
