Description
Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana), also called Dragonhead, is a showy native perennial in the mint family known for its unique flowers—you can gently move them, and they’ll stay in place. It produces tall spikes of tubular blooms in shades of white, soft pink, and purple.
Growing around 3–4 feet tall, it blooms from late summer into fall, providing an important nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds when many other plants are fading. The flowers are packed along upright stems, giving it a full, colorful look.
Obedient Plant grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist soils, but it’s adaptable and can handle both occasional dryness and wetter conditions. It’s a great fit for rain gardens, low areas, and pollinator plantings. Like many plants in the mint family, it spreads by rhizomes and can fill in quickly. This makes it ideal for larger spaces or areas where you want good coverage, but it may need some control in smaller gardens.
It pairs well with other plants that like similar moist to medium conditions, such as Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata), Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata), Ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata), Joe-Pye Weed (Eutrochium maculatum), and Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis). These species all thrive in similar environments and help create a full, layered planting that stays colorful late into the season.
