Description
Savanna Blazing Star (Liatris scariosa var. nieuwlandii), also known as Northern Blazing Star, Eastern Blazing Star, or Nieuwland’s Blazing Star, is a resilient native perennial with bold spikes of orchid-purple flowers that bloom from late summer into early fall.
Reaching up to 3 feet tall, this drought-tolerant species thrives in full sun and dry to moderately fertile soils—including rocky woodlands, sandy prairies, and open meadows. Its vibrant blooms attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens, prairie plantings, and cut flower arrangements.
Tough, heat- and humidity-tolerant, Liatris scariosa is ideal for low-maintenance landscapes across its native range from Maine to Georgia and west to Arkansas.
