Description
Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera), also known as Button Blazing Star, is a late-summer native wildflower known for its vibrant lavender blooms and textured foliage. Blooming from July to October, it attracts a wide range of pollinators, including butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and specialist moths like the Glorious Flower Moth and Three-lined Flower Moth.
This drought-tolerant perennial grows up to 3 feet tall, with narrow, rough basal leaves and a slightly zigzag stem—reflected in its Latin name aspera, meaning “rough.” It thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soils and is perfect for sunny borders, rock gardens, and dry prairies. Avoid soggy or poorly drained spots, especially in winter.
Tough, low-maintenance, and pollinator-friendly, Rough Blazing Star brings vertical interest and vibrant color to native landscapes.
