Description
June Grass (Koeleria macrantha), also known as prairie Junegrass, is a compact native bunchgrass commonly found in prairies, rocky slopes, and dry open landscapes across much of North America. This cool-season grass begins growing early in spring, bringing fresh green color to prairie plantings before many warm-season grasses emerge.
By early summer, June Grass produces narrow, upright seed heads that start with a soft green to silvery tone and gradually mature to tan. These seed heads add fine texture and movement to prairie landscapes while providing food for birds and wildlife.
June Grass thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky sites where many other grasses struggle. Its drought tolerance and tidy growth habit make it a valuable species for prairie restorations, dry landscapes, and naturalized plantings.
