Description
Tufted Hairgrass (Deschampsia caespitosa) is a graceful native cool-season grass valued for its fine texture and airy flowering display. It forms tidy clumps of narrow green leaves that provide soft structure in natural landscapes.
In early to mid-summer, delicate branching flower panicles rise above the foliage, creating a light, cloud-like effect as they sway in the breeze. These seed heads begin green to purplish before maturing to a soft golden tan, adding seasonal interest and movement to the garden.
Tufted Hairgrass grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers medium to moist soils. It is commonly found in meadows, wet prairies, and open woodlands, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, naturalized plantings, and habitat-focused landscapes.
