Description
Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) is a beautiful wildflower known for its drought tolerance and vibrant blue‑violet blooms that appear for over five weeks from late summer through the first frost. Its fuzzy, purplish‑blue flowers form dense clusters atop branching stems, and at about two feet tall, it spreads rapidly via both rhizomes and seed—so you’ll want to keep an eye on it in smaller beds.
Native to the eastern and southeastern United States, Blue Mistflower thrives along wood margins, stream banks, low woods, wet meadows, and ditches, where moisture is plentiful and competition is varied. Ideal for border plantings or as a groundcover in larger landscapes, it supports native bees and serves as a host for insects like the Clymene Moth and Lined Ruby Tiger Moth, adding late‑season color and pollinator appeal to any garden.
Also known as Hardy Ageratum, Wild Ageratum, or Blue Boneset, it was formerly classified as Eupatorium coelestinum.
