Description
Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica), also known as eastern spring beauty, is a charming native spring ephemeral that carpets woodland floors with delicate flowers in early spring. Slender stems produce small star-shaped blooms that range from white to soft pink, often marked with darker pink stripes.
Blooming from early to mid-spring, Spring Beauty provides nectar and pollen for early-emerging pollinators, especially native bees that rely on early-season flowers. The plant’s narrow, grass-like leaves and graceful flowers create a soft, natural look in woodland landscapes.
Spring Beauty thrives in rich woodland soils with partial shade to filtered sunlight and is commonly found in forests, woodland edges, and floodplain habitats throughout eastern North America. After flowering, the foliage fades as the plant goes dormant by early summer. Over time, it spreads gently to form natural colonies that bring reliable early-season color to shaded native plantings.
