Description
Rose Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua), also called Pink, Red, or Purple Turtlehead, is a moisture-loving native perennial known for its dense spikes of rosy pink to magenta flowers. The blooms resemble a turtle’s head, with closed petals that bumblebees push open to access nectar.
Blooming from late summer into fall, it provides important late-season color and supports native bees, along with occasional hummingbirds. It typically grows 2–3 feet tall with sturdy stems and deep green, serrated leaves that hold their structure through the season.
Rose Turtlehead thrives in partial shade to full sun with consistent moisture. It prefers rich, moist soils and is well-suited for rain gardens, streambanks, pond edges, and low areas. In drier sites, added mulch can help retain moisture. It spreads slowly by rhizomes, forming colonies over time.
It is generally deer- and rabbit-resistant once established and is considered rare in parts of its native range, making it a valuable addition to restoration and native plantings.
Rose Turtlehead pairs well with other moisture-loving species like White Turtlehead (Chelone glabra), Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), and Soft Rush (Juncus effusus), creating a layered planting with strong late-season interest.
