Description
Curly-styled Wood Sedge (Carex rosea), also called Rosy Sedge or Curly Wood Sedge, is a fine-textured native sedge that works well as a ground layer in shaded landscapes. It typically grows 8–12 inches tall, with narrow, grass-like leaves and delicate seed heads that can show a slight rosy tint.
This species thrives in partial to full shade and prefers dry to medium-moist woodland soils. It’s especially useful in those harder-to-plant dry shade areas, where it forms a soft, low groundcover. Like many sedges, it is a cool-season grower, putting on most of its growth in spring and fall.
Curly-styled Wood Sedge spreads slowly to form small colonies over time, making it easy to manage in garden settings. It’s a strong choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalized plantings where a subtle, low-maintenance native is needed.
It is often compared to Straight-Styled Wood Sedge (Carex radiata), which looks similar but has straighter seed structures and prefers slightly wetter conditions. Curly-styled Wood Sedge is better suited for drier woodland sites.
