Description
Tollway Sedge, also known as Carex praegracilis, is a hardy, adaptable sedge that thrives in a variety of environments, including moist borders, woodland gardens, bogs, and along water margins. It is well-suited to both high-moisture and drought conditions, making it a versatile choice for natural landscaping and restoration projects.
This native perennial spreads by dark, creeping rhizomes and forms dense ground cover with its fine, basal leaves. It produces small, inconspicuous flower spikes featuring both male and female flowers, typically blooming from mid to late season. Seed clusters appear in late spring to early summer.
Tollway Sedge is often used as a turfgrass alternative due to its low maintenance needs, ability to withstand foot traffic, and ecological benefits. Its resilience and adaptability make it an excellent choice for rain gardens, swales, and restoration of disturbed sites.
