Description
American Spikenard (Aralia racemosa) is a bold native woodland plant that brings height, texture, and wildlife value to shaded landscapes. Its large, compound leaves and branching stems give it a lush, almost tropical look that stands out in woodland gardens and naturalized plantings.
In early to mid-summer, loose clusters of small creamy white flowers appear above the foliage. These blooms attract bees and other pollinators, adding life to shady garden spaces. By late summer, the flowers develop into deep purple-black berries that birds and wildlife enjoy.
American Spikenard grows best in partial to full shade and prefers rich, moderately moist soils. Over time it forms small colonies through short rhizomes, making it a great choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and habitat-focused plantings.
